Conventional hemodialysis machines are large and require bathtubs worth of water per treatment. Not only is this detrimental to any kind of usability, it drives cost more than any other treatment component. Late-stage startup NxStage Medical was the original pioneer in home hemodialysis. Their first-generation water purification and dialysate preparation system was a breakthrough for its time but after a decade the company had learned many homes required additional pre-treatment and handling of the machines and disposables was still beyond the capabilities of many of its very frail users.
Veralur teamed up with NxStage's engineering team to develop a breakthrough second-generation system that would not require additional pre-treatment while optimizing both (a) human factors & usability and (b) cost per treatment compared to the 1st gen system. Veralur was able to identify innovative sources of water quality data that led to elimination of hardware modules and greater control over IP. We also conducted and documented for regulatory submission comprehensive usability & human factors testing with clinician and patient user groups, according to applicable standards and guidelines.
NxStage achieved accelerated time-to-market while improving margins over the original system. Feedback from user groups was overwhelmingly positive and streamlining of operations became possible as an entire system and disposables for pre-treatment was no longer needed.
